Samakal is a popular Bangladeshi daily newspaper. This newspaper publishes news both in Bangla and English though the print version contains Bangla news only. Times Media Limited and Ha-Meem Group are the owners of this newspaper. Its publisher is Abul Kalam Azad.

History

The Daily Samakal started its journey in 2005. Its founding editor is Golam Sarwar. At present, the acting editor of Samakal is Muzzammil Hossain. He took the post on 1st December 2021. Since the newspaper's inception in 2005, its journalists had worked despite numerous threats. Goutam Das, the bureau chief in Faridpur, was assassinated in 2005. In 2006, governing party cadres entered Samakal's Rajshahi bureau headquarters and abused its bureau chief.

Golam Sarwar is the founding editor of the Daily Samakal. He is also the Jugantor’s founding editor. In 2014, he got Ekushe Padak. During his student life, he was involved with journalism. His career began with the Azadi as a university correspondent. He has worked for several newspapers in Bangladesh. He has published several books including Rongin Balloon, Amar Joto Kotha, Shompadoker Jobanbondi, etc.

After renowned journalist Golam Sarwar passed away in 2018, the editorship at Samakal became vacant. Then Mustafiz Shafi took over the post. After Shafi resigned, Muzammil Husain became the acting editor. Since December 2021, Muzzammil Husain has been serving as the acting editor of this popular newspaper.
